James Beattie & Co. # 17921 circa mid to
late 1880's. 450 BPE 31/4 inch Double Rifle by a very well respected
London maker for his rifles. Excellent rebounding back-action locks,
round action with a Jones' rotary lever retain 95% original case colors.
The 28" steel barrels have a wide hand filed rib with a blade front
sight , three bladed (one rigid, two folding, 100,200 and 300 meters)
rear sight and also uses Henry's Rifling which has either 7 or 9 (in
this case 7) grooves and a full twist every 22 inches. This rifling was
almost exclusively used with the 450 3 1/4 caliber. The barrel address
is 104 QUEEN VICTORIA ST, LONDON. The walnut stock measures 14
3/8 x 1 1/2 x 2 1/4 x 3/16 cast off to it's original hard rubber butt
plate. Overall condition is excellent, cased in a period DR hammer case
and accessories. $11,500 |

James Purdey & Sons #6570 completed in
October 1863 for a Dr Ludin. Included in the original case is a key
fob
made with a piece of ivory and a faded inscription - Ludin. Originally
built as a pin fire, conversion to center-fire of #6570 was completed by
Purdey at some time later. Since Purdey records rarely note these
conversions, Purdey historian, Patrick Maynard, verified this one by
it's superior quality and same engraving by J Lucas before and after the
conversion. 30 inch Damascus barrels measure; bores .733 on both, no
chokes and .028 minimum walls on both barrels. Highest quality walnut
stock
measures 14 1/4 x 1 1/2 x 2 1/16 x 1/4 inches to a checkered butt.
Another intriguing concept seen on Purdey 6570 is "Long Guard Lever"
lockup similar in appearance and function as the more common rotary
under lever but using the complete trigger guard as the under lever. The
upper
tang with this lock up also is very long.
This superb gun is in excellent condition in its original oak case,
label with loading instructions by Purdey, Purdey powder and shot
measures and crimping tool, main spring clamp cleaning rod and jags. The
workers on #6570 were; Jointing- F Mayo, Polishing and Hardening- Abbe
Robbins, Engraving- J Lucas, Cocking- G Prentice and Fitting and filing
levers to breechloaders- Smith Jnr. A collection in itself. $34,500 |

original condition both inside and out. Trigger guard, butt plate and

engraving. The trigger guard tang safety (Wyatt's Safeguard- patent

their earliest flintlocks. The Stock is has some wear not from hunting
but handling over the past 150 + years. It measures 14 1/8 x 1 5/16 x 1
5/8 x 0 cast. Weight is 7 lbs. 2.2 oz. $9500 |

James Purdey & Sons #8688 circa 1872
Number 2 of a pair of Purdey percussion shotguns 13 bores delivered
to Lord Walsingham on August 21, 1872. As described in Unsworth's "The
Early Purdeys" 8868 is the last muzzle-loading shotgun recorded in
Purdey's first Dimension Book, which caters for all numbers up to and
including #9165. Any other muzzle-loaders are felt to be anachronisms
and not "early Purdeys ". For more info on Lord Walsingham and Purdey
#8688 look on thr Historical Guns section and also Dallas' new book "The
British Sporting Gun and rifle" on pages 64 &65.

James Purdey & Sons #
14069 circa 1891 20 bore bar in wood hammer gun with top lever opening.
29 inch Whithworth steel barrels with 2 1/2 inch chambers measure R/L
bores .632/.633; chokes .001/.029; walls .024/.024. As you may notice,
the bores are very open for a 20 bore. However this gun was originally
proofed as a 19 bore (.627) as marked on the barrel flats. he English
straight stock measures 14 1/4 x 1 9/16 x 2 5/16 x 0 cast to a checkered
butt. You may have noticed also a weird little appendage
under the trigger guard. One can only speculate as to its purpose.
Knowing that it was ordered for the Baron de Hirsch eliminates
some possibilities. However we also that he was offering his fnancial
services to the Queen of England and her daughter. For more of the provenance of Purdey 14069, please look at the
Historical Guns listing. More than likely the "pendent" is
residual to the rotary under lever, its morphological ancestor, as
requested by the owner to compensate for "what ever". Cased in an original Purdey case with some accessories. $57,000 |

James Purdey & Sons #10749 circa 1881 Side lock
hammer gun with three sets of barrels. 1st and original barrels were 12
bore 32 inch with 2 3/4 inch chambers F&F. Two other barrels were made
by Purdey at a later time; one 12 bore 2 3/4 30 inch C&M; the second 20
bore 3 1/2 inch chambers 32". All were fitted to one fore arm. When
found by present owner, the gun had the 30 inch 12 bore and the other
two were lost. During the next few years, the Purdey was refurbished to
original by restocking (David Trevallion) and manufacturing two new sets
of barrels ( Michael Kelly of London a Purdey trained barrel maker). All
were fitted into a three barrel motor case designed by David and made by
Boot Hill Gun Cases. The new stock measures 15 1/8 x 1 3/8 x 2 1/16 to
heel and toe pieces. With the 30" 12 bore Damascus barrels the gun
weights 7-2 and the barrels measure R/L bores .742/.741; chokes
.008/.021; walls .021/.021. With the 32" 12 bore 2 3/4" the gun weights
7-8 and the new steel barrels measure bores .729/.729; chokes .040/.040;
walls new. With the 32 inch 20 bore 2 3/4 inch chambers, the gun weights
7-8 and measures bores .612/.612; chokes .008/.30; walls new. All cased
with original Purdey period accessories. A best gun for a serious
collector and shooter of vintage Purdeys. $85,000 or best
offer. |
